To many, the idea of a robot planting corn or riding the range is science fiction, yet serious research is being conducted into the application of robots to agriculture. One of the most successful projects so far has been the development of a sheep-shearing robot in Australia. Other experimental applications of robots in agriculture include a machine for the automatic break-up of pork carcasses (Clarke, 1985), transplanting of seedlings (Hwang and Sisttle, 1985), pruning grapevines in France (Sevila, 1985), and picking apples (D' Enson, 1985). All these systems are in experimental stages, but they have each demonstrated their potential. |
